The conversion of metal fuel tanks in cars and light trucks to multi-layer plastic designs has been occurring for several years. Key drivers for this conversion are the flexibility to design the tank shape to fit the space available, and the need to reduce overall vehicle weight.

Plastic fuel tanks and all other fuel handling components must not only be tested for potential fuel leakage, but also must meet strict government hydro-carbon emission requirements.
